Frequently Asked Questions

What is an Enrolled Agent?

Enrolled Agent (EA) status is the highest credential awarded by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). EAs have unlimited rights to represent individual and business taxpayers before the IRS—just like CPAs and attorneys.

To earn the designation, an EA must either:

  • Pass a comprehensive three-part IRS exam covering all aspects of tax law, or

  • Qualify through prior IRS experience

EAs are required to complete ongoing continuing education and uphold a strict code of ethics. Unlike many tax preparers who are only authorized to file returns, EAs are empowered to represent clients in audits, appeals, and collections—anywhere in the country.

What do you charge?

My tax preparation fees typically range from $100 to $600, depending on:

  • The complexity of your tax return (complex returns may be more than $600)

  • How organized your documents are

  • Whether you have questions or special concerns

Before we begin, I’ll review your previous year’s return and ask a few questions. Then I’ll send you a Letter of Engagement that clearly outlines the services and the fee.
No surprises—even if it takes longer than expected.

How does your Secure Client Portal work?

I use a secure client portal provided by Drake Software, a trusted name in professional tax preparation since 1977. I also use Drake’s tax preparation software. When you click the portal link on my website, you’ll be taken to a secure page hosted by SecureFilePro, where you can log in to safely upload tax documents, download files I’ve shared with you, and send private messages. If we have never done business before, use the “Guest Exchange” to securely upload your documents. Everything is encrypted and meets IRS standards for data protection so your information stays between you and me.

Is it worth it to hire a tax preparer?

If your return is simple, you might be fine doing it yourself or using a free service. But if you:

  • Own a small business

  • Have investments or rental income

  • Are unsure about deductions or credits

  • Just want peace of mind

…then hiring a tax preparer can save you time, stress, and money. I stay current with tax law and help clients avoid costly mistakes while maximizing their refunds.

Do you e-file returns?

Yes! I e-file all eligible returns. It’s:

  • Faster – Get your refund sooner

  • More accurate – Fewer errors

  • Secure – Strongly encouraged by the IRS

Can you help if I get audited?

Yes. While audits are rare, I can:

  • Help you respond to IRS inquiries

  • Organize and present your documents

  • As an Enrolled Agent, represent you before the IRS.

What documents do I need to provide you?

To get started, you’ll need to:

  • Sign the Letter of Engagement

  • Provide all relevant tax documents, such as:

    • W-2s, 1099s, 1098s

    • Profit & Loss Statement (if you own a business)

    • Statement of Activities (for NH nonprofits)

    • Any other documents related to your income or deductions

I’ll let you know if anything else is needed as I prepare your return.

When should I contact you to prepare my taxes?

The earlier, the better! Reaching out in January or February gives us plenty of time to:

  • Gather documents

  • Answer questions

  • Avoid the last-minute rush
